(2010 - 2014) Hand-blown glass tumbler, archival black and white print (4'x10'), clay brick, musical notation generated from motion-tracking the movements necessary to make the glass.
This project was originally created as a live performance. I wanted to use the movements of glass-blowing to create a musical composition. I made a MAX MSP patch to translate my movement to musical notes on a piano keyboard. The resulting score was transcribed into musical notation and shown with the object that had been produced.
The interface shown in the first image follows my hands as they move through space while blowing glass. It collects the X/Y coordinates of the corresponding pixels and sends those numbers to keys on a piano keyboard in real-time, producing a jarring piece of music resembling impossibly fast experimental jazz.
Once the score was recorded, I used another program to translate the audio to musical notation. The resulting 4' x 10' print maps the complex series of movements used to produce a seemingly simple object.
