(2008) Dimensions variable. Steel, video, animation, pocket projector, blown glass..
This project was created for a drawing exhibition. I was interested in the act of glassblowing as a tool for generating a drawing. I made a video of myself making a glass bowl and used motion-tracking software to map everywhere in the frame that the glass on the end of the blowpipe went. I then superimposed an animated line that followed the path of the glass.
The line sampled its color from the hot glass and became thinner over time before disappearing, similar to the way molten glass changes color and stiffens as it cools. I removed the live-action footage from the background so that the animated line was on a black background. Finally, the bowl that had been produced during the video was sandblasted and suspended in a steel armature to become a small projection screen for the video of the animated line.
